Yemenis call a stone like this Musawwar, a picture agate. Here a strong red fills the upper part of the oval and meets a dark, uneven band below, so the face reads like the last light of evening above a line of hills.
The sterling silver answers in kind: a beaded rim around the stone, and on each shoulder a full rose with scrolling leaves, carved in relief against a darkened ground. A chevron pattern runs inside the band.
A landscape no one drew, framed in roses.
